This has nothing to do with Weird Crime Theater or even comics, but why the hell not? I’m on vacation!
Let me make some points before we start:
a) I am not very good at video games.
b) For this list, I tended to favor video games which I managed to play through to completion, even if that completion only came 20 years after the game’s initial release.
c) I have played way more games than this, many of them fine, but these are the ones I most often feel like re-playing. Hence eight and not ten — I couldn’t think of two more.
d) I haven’t played any video games since my son was born three years ago.
e) I dislike competitive multiplayer games where I am even more likely to get my ass handed to me without having any fun.
1. Clayman Clayman (the Japanese PS1 port version of The Neverhood for PC)
A well done point-and-click adventure always makes my day.
2. Tomb Raider (PS1)
Mulele introduced me to this game and I played the hell out of it until it actually gave me nightmares. Shame the sequels were so awful (I played 2 and 3), though I’ve heard the most recent ones are pretty good.
3. Chu♥lip (PS2)
Go around and kiss shit. Unbelievable soundtrack and sound design in general. I played it in Japanese, but apparently there is an English version out there as well.
4. Final Fantasy 10 (PS2)
Played the hell out of this one too. It wasn’t unusual for me to come home after work and hit it for 6-8 hours. I spent some time trying to max my stats — which I never achieved — but I found I was getting so powerful that I could beat the final battle in about two minutes anyway, so what was the point? Mind-blowingly beautiful cut scenes.
5. Neuromancer (Commodore 64)
I only finished this a few years back. The video below is for the DOS version I believe, but true worshippers at the House of Pong know that the C64 version is the shit. Can’t find a video for it online though.
6. Grand Theft Auto III (PS2)
Not much to say about this except I got the tank and completed it at 100% which is unachievable at my skill level on the other sequels.
7. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2)
I would love to play more of these if my gaming days weren’t so over.
8. Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia (PC)
I totally sucked at this game and never got anywhere with it, but goddamn it was addictive. That said, this is the one game on this list that I wasn’t sure would make the cut since I beat the habit, and I’m not sure that I would want to go back to it. A very hard game (I found).
